The New Precision Guitar Kit Hardware Test Fit
It is a good idea to get in the habit of doing a test fit for your hardware when you start a new guitar kit. This matters more for some aspects of the hardware than others, but regardless it's a good practice. It is even more important if you are doing a thick automotive style finish, which is what we have going on this guitar.

Great video thanks
Hi Brad, I realize this video was done quite some time ago now, but I was wondering if you had previously raised the grain on this alder body before sanding with 320? I have a similar alder body that I plan to stain with a water-based stain and wasn't sure if I needed to do this before applying the stain. Thanks for all the great content!
Brad I'm am going to paint my guitar with 2k clear coat how long should I wait before I start flat sanding the surface?
That looks pretty good. 8:04 More like, "good work Brad for thinking ahead and laying out paper"
My brother and I used boiled linseed oil in his music store in the EARLY '70s. We applied it to guitar fingerboards. I probably rubbed it in as much with my fingers as using a paper towel. It worked great. Never had a single problem with it and am seriously considering going back to linseed because I have not found a fingerboard oil yet that twangs my strings. They all brag ... but no body darkens or strengthens rosewood or ebony like linseed. And boy ... is it cheaper.
Hi Brad, loving the content. Can I use this oil-based Minwax wipe-on method over solvent based car paint or is it only suitable for wood finishes? I want to avoid the hazards of 2k spray if possible. How long should I wait for the base colour to harden? I’ve read potentially 3-4 weeks to allow it to fully harden.
My brother and I used boiled linseed oil on guitar boards in his Tallahassee music store, back in the EARLY '70s. Worked quite well and we never had any problems with it. I generally just use Four ZERO steel wood to clean frets and board at the same time (masking tape over the pickups). Wipe it off well. Apply oil.
Rustoleum back-of-can instructions suggest a couple of medium coats from 12" away. That will result in NO discernible hammer effect - just a matte silver look. They ought to have said a heavy coat from 8" away - but so many people would have trouble applying that with no runs that the manufacturer has probably figured, supplying instructions for the wrong finish effect was the lesser evil. I've a feeling this is one type finish that is actually better rolled on from a can, because a sprayable formulation will necessarily have to be thinner which doesn't lend itself to this effect.
Does this work on a plywood body? 86 Squier stratocaster/TELECASTER contemporary bullet 1
It should. You’ll just need to do a bit of filling after if the plywood has gaps.
@@BradAngove , thanks Brandon. Hope the baby is well.
Thanks Brad, that's a fantastic technique. I really appreciate it. My binding is a slightly lower than the body, therefore I foresee scraping more paint possibly, but I feel I can clean it up with slight sanding on the imperfections before clear coating.
How long between the final coat of clear and when you sand?
It depends on the paint type, but for this stuff I give it 3-4 weeks.
This is really professional.
What are the ingredients in odie's oil
Yay rust oleum Yaaaay!
Fuggin brilliant brother man. Nuff Said
Hey Brad!!! love watching this come together i know it's many years later but this got me to try my hand at this kit! I had a question for you which is do i need to do any grain filling? the specific kit i ordered is Basswood and i see a lot of things online saying with Basswood its not necessary because its not a wide open pored is this accurate?
Yeah you should be able to just seal basswood rather than grain filling it.
Oxford recommended 3 cans of clear. My Satin went on like orange peel. Now I'm being told level sand and polish.
Yeah, I generally start with gloss to build it up. Then sand smooth with 800 grit and add a couple thin coats of satin to finish off. If you polish your satin it won’t be satin anymore.
You must have read my mind
Do you use wood stain? Or is it only linseed oil you think that combusts when left on a crumpled rag? Wood stain has a higher combustion rate than linseed oil. There are a lot of combustible materials/products out there so unless you list them all Please stay in your lane. A little knowledge is a bad thing.
There sure are. And this one is notorious. You don’t get to decide what my lane is bud; don’t shy away from a little knowledge.
@@BradAngove yes please a little knowledge is bad, give a lot of knowledge. And don’t just give the bad information give information on how to avoid “ fire “ when using a daily product, again stay in your far left lane so the rest of us can live a normal life.
I usually don’t fall into traps of people looking for an argument but you got me. I’m out so please don’t reply and I will do the same.
Again, you don’t get to decide what’s in my lane. If you prefer different information, make your own video. It must be nice to feel such a sense of entitlement that you get to decide what other people get to produce. However, it’s quite hypocritical given the obvious inference from your “far left” comment. You also don’t get to post comments and then decide if I reply. Stop trying to censor people. Just because you don’t like something on the internet doesn’t mean it needs to be changed to make you happy. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for showing! How much would you sand a catalyzed matt clear top?
Is that the paint you’re using, or do you mean the original stuff you’re painting over?
@@BradAngove the paint, Spraymax 2k Matt
Hi. What tape did you use to mark the side binding?
1/8” orange fineline tape.
Very informative video
I'm years late in this but one question. if you didn't pop the catalyst in the 2k does that mean it acts like 1k if you spray it?
I’m honestly not sure if it’s will harden properly at all without the catalyst.
I always have trouble getting a straight edge on my lines. Any tips on preventing bleeding?
Make your first couple coats very light and try not to spray at an angle toward the tape edge.
@@BradAngove wow! Cool! Thanks Brad. Love your channel!
Whats up with the camera brad? after rewatching your old vids then this this one is blurry? I hope i'm not sounding like an ass, but it's just an observation. In other news your videos on precision guitars is leading me in a dangerous way and I might spend money... hahaha
I wish I knew man. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again; some software issue at the conversion stage. It didn’t look like that when I edited it.
@@BradAngove What do you edit with?
Premier pro
@@BradAngove maybe it's compressing it during rendering or maybe the internal resolution is off? Im not too versed in premier pro unfortunately but hopefully you figure it out brother
Hey man for the first black paint can I use those spray can to paint the base?
Yes
Since I cannot find Behlens (sp), is there another brand of buffers polish available in the USA that would work? Thanks
Many of them. The Mohawk version would work. Or the medium and fine compound from Oxford supply. Or meguiars ultimate compound and ultimate polish.
It will wear off and go grey. Eventually white when it wears totally off. Lay off the drugs 😂. Surly a rosewood neck with black stain would have been the wiser option. As the substrate is naturally dark
Perhaps I’m missing something. Can you please help me to understand why you didn’t scrape the binding (to level it with the top) ‘before’ you stained/sprayed the top color(s)? Or is this scraping simply called, ‘finish scraping’ the paint/stain off the binding? Thank you for this great tip!
I’m just taking the paint off the binding. It was already leveled off when the kit showed up.
@@BradAngove … ok Brad, thanks for helping me understand.
I Buy Epiphones, then kit them up to the slandered of a Gibson counterpart. Its like i guess a high end guitar kit.
Makes sense
This is… bad
Oxford is way too expensive, especially after shipping, $80 a quart for clear, $27 for a single dye color.after shipping its ridiculous.
Great info Can thus product be used on stainless running boards?
If they are prepped properly.
I would have been interesting to see you flex that board, just a little bit, to see if the the coating cracked or delaminated at all. -Still, I'm very impressed.
Interesting. I don’t think I have it anymore, but if I come across it I’ll try this and let you know.
Ive got an old house that has some sort of dark “mud” on all the trim. Its a semi-transparent finish over stained oak. Could be a pigmented lacquer? Polyshades seems to be the only thing that ive found to get close to this appearance. Love to hear if there is something you’d recommend.
That sounds like the type of thing you could expect from polyshades or another stain suspended in finish.
This is an unusually good video.
Thank you.
I didn't click to listen your abracadabra. You make yourself real donkey. After 30 seconds I turned off the computer.
Are their touch up pens any good?
They’re pretty good. I personally don’t like touchup pens at all. There’s are pretty typical.
@@BradAngove I’ve got a small nitro paint peel near the neck pocket of my guitar when fitting the neck… Do you think it’s possible to match the color & fix?
@frostyarcade it’s certainly possible. It will likely just require some work smoothing everything out and polishing after.
How much sanding should be done at the very early stage of applying grain filler?
Enough to flatten it out without sanding past the filler.
Is your stand a actual product or something fabricated?
For this video it was just the old one I made myself. I now use actual ones made by Spin Twist Spray Rig.
What color did he use?
Gold
Explain sand and polish after clear coat please. I’m new at this so what grain sand paper and what do you mean by polish?
I have a bunch of videos on that process that I’m sure you will find helpful.
@@BradAngove easy question? I get it that you get paid for every view of your videos but shame on you for putting your financial benefits ahead of your viewers.
Your sense of entitlement is, frankly, astounding. I spend hours putting together comprehensive videos to provide information and help people, and you think you’re entitled to demand that I try to reproduce that information in writing for you for your convenience? Then when I ask you to refer to the videos, a superior source of that information, for your own benefit, you try to shame me? Get serious. This isn’t my job; I do it to help people. People who actually appreciate it. Apparently you don’t fit that category.
You let it cure for 1 week before the clear coat?
In this particular case, yes.
@@BradAngove so I'm spry can vetran sometimes when I spry coat of paint or clear it wrinkles the one below it is it because Acrylic and Aresol can's don't get along well??
@user-ek4yp1hu6l sometimes that’s the issue. Usually it’s related to the top layer shrinking while the bottom layer is still wet. Using lighter coats usually helps.
Have you tried Duplicolor 1k Clear Coat? If so, any thoughts?
It is. I’m not fond of it.
We are about to stain some Cypress wood for exterior porch posts. I have been reading that it takes stain unevenly. I don’t want to see a bunch of splotchiness so should we seal the cypress first or do a very light layer of stain, seal, and then another layer of stain?
Use wood conditioner or a very reduced layer of shellac to partially seal it first.
I’m building my first guitar from a Solo kit. I’ve been watching many of your videos regarding painting and finishing. Do you still use tung oil for the necks? You may have discussed this in other videos. Still working my way through them. Thanks.
I do sometimes. I use Odies oil more often now.
So, I got a butterscotch blond squire Tele. I am going to paint it like a Page Dragoncaster. That is the plan anyway. I sanded off the body after fully dissembling. I still like the Butterscoth so I just sanded the gloss off it. Next, I was going to stencil the image and paint it on, and then seal it. So, I have Deco art Americana Acrylic paint for the dragon. My question is if I wanted to seal it with wax free shellac would it seal that paint? Is the acrylic ok to use. First repaint ever. quite an endeavor. But i got a image in my head. it won't be exactly like the page one but that is ok. I want it to be mine. Thanks.
That should work. The shellac might wrinkly the acrylic a bit though, so test them on something else first.
What would be the steps if the neck I’m trying to finish is an open grain wood?
It depends on what you want for your finish. You may want to grain fill first before you start oiling/finishing.
Did you end up leaving the texture on this guitar? I did a black crackle with sort of a neon green underneath with a can of 2k clear and I kinda like the alligator skin look. Been debating on leaving it
I did end up leaving it. I like it that way.
Looks amazing, Ima try this for my custom guitar build. One question, do you let the gold dry before you wipe off the soap?
Yes, I try to use a paint that dries to the touch quickly so I don’t have to leave the soap on too long.
